Terms And Definitions Associated With Self Hypnosis

When entering in to something new, there may be terms that you are not familiar with. It is important that you become familiar with the terms that you will be hearing in reference to hypnosis and self hypnosis. These terms will give you a clearer insight and understanding into the world of hypnosis.

Alpha: This is the state the brain is in during a beginning meditative state. When you are daydreaming you are in an Alpha brainwave state. The importance of this state is that it will provide a link between the conscious and subconscious mind.

Auto-Hypnosis: This term is the same as self hypnosis.

Awakening: This term refers to bringing a person out of hypnosis. Or in the case of self hypnosis, bringing yourself back
to an alert state of mind.

Beta: This refers to the state of mind that we are in when we are awake and functioning during our daily lives.

Cataleptic: This refers to a medium hypnotic state in which you are not aware of any external stimuli anymore.

Delta: This term refers to being in a deep sleep or coma.

Eye Fixation Technique: This is a technique in which you will stare at a certain point or a certain object.

Imagery: Using one's imagination to bypass critical the critical mind. This is used during hypnosis when visual images are needed during hypnosis.

Induction: This is the term that refers to the part of hypnosis in which you are guided into a relaxed hypnotic state.

Modeling: This refers to the study and imitating of others who excel at what you are wanting to excel at.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming: This is also known as NLP and refers to the science of modeling other people to gain a similar result.

Reframing: This refers to using your imagination to visualize a different outcome for a past experience. Mostly used when a bad experience needs to be gotten past before a person can progress.

Subconscious: This is the part of your mind that hold all memories and also plays a main role in our emotions. We are mostly unaware of our subconscious. When people refer to instinct they are actually speaking of the subconscious.

Theta: This refers to the brainwaves that are products of the subconscious mind. This is a deep state of hypnosis. These brainwaves are present in our brains during sleep when we are dreaming and also during REM sleep.

Trance: This is the state you are in while you are hypnotized. It refers to the altered state of mind you are in both alpha and theta.

Waking hypnosis: This refers to being hypnotized naturally while we are awake and functioning. This can be done while zoning out in front of the television, becoming extremely engrossed in a book or even daydreaming. During this state you are awake but you are totally focused on just that one thing and nothing else.

When you are learning about self hypnosis, you are going to hear many terms and even hear about many different techniques that are associated with hypnosis and self hypnosis. You may fear trying self hypnosis in the beginning because you don't want to harm your mind. Do not worry about fumbling around learning self hypnosis and hurting yourself, you are completely
safe during this time. If you do it right it will be successful, if you do it wrong it will not be successful. So no harm no foul. The above terms and definitions should help you to move along more smoothly while learning about self hypnosis and trying to successfully hypnotize yourself.
